The Germans had wanted Tsingtao to be a Gibraltar of the East, and Kaiser Wilhelm II reputedly said that he would be shamed more by giving Tsingtao to the Japanese than by giving Berlin to the Russians. Under the infamous Article 231 of the Versailles Treaty, Germany was required to pay the allies 226 billion Reichsmarks in gold - around US$750 billion in today's money - enraging the German people, and eventually producing Adolf Hitler. Visiting Qingdao China May 8, 2009
Qingdao was ceded to Germany in 1898 as a repayment to Kaiser Wilhelm II for the murder of two German missionaries. The German administrators opened Tsingtao brewery in 1903 and spent the next couple of decades building German-style buildings throughout the town until the Japanese took it over in 1914, when it was passed back and forth between Japan and China until Japan's final defeat in 1945.
